How utilization affects your score
Amounts owed make up roughly thirty percent of a FICO score. Utilization, the share of available revolving credit you are using, is the dominant amounts-owed signal. Lenders interpret high utilization as elevated short-term risk, even when the underlying borrower has long-standing accounts and on-time history.
FICO models do not publish exact point penalties. The ranges shown above synthesize public guidance from myFICO, Experian and Equifax credit-education materials, and represent the central tendency of impact bands rather than a guaranteed score outcome. Individual borrower files vary based on payment history depth, account age, recent inquiries, and other factors.
